วัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้า เป็นวัดที่สร้างมานานและถือว่าเป็นปูชนียสถานที่สำคัญแห่งหนึ่ง เพราะมีรอยพระพุทธบาทและรอยตากผ้า เป็นที่เคารพสักการะของพุทธศาสนิกชนโดยทั่วไป ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า ในอดีต สมัยพุทธกาล เมื่อครั้งที่พระพุทธองค์ยังทรงพระชนม์ อยู่ได้เสด็จมาสู่สุวรรณภูมิโดยพุทธนิมิต ครั้งหนึ่งพระองค์ได้เสด็จจาริกมาบริเวณวัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้า แล้วได้ทรงอธิษฐานประทับรอยพระบาทไว้บนพื้นศิลาใหญ่ และได้ทรงรับสั่ง ให้พระอานนทเถระนำจีวรไปตากไว้บนผาลาดใกล้ ๆ ที่ประทับ บริเวณที่ตากจีวรนั้นปรากฏเป็นรอยตารางคล้ายตาจีวร ต่อมามีคนไปพบจึงเรียกวัดนี้จึงได้ชื่อว่า "วัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้า"
กาลผ่านมาประมาณพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๓ พระเจ้าศรีธรรมาโศกมหาราช ผู้ครองเมืองชมพูทวีปโปรดให้มีการทำสังคายนาพระธรรมวินัยขึ้น เป็นครั้งที่ ๓ ครั้งนั้นก็ส่งพระโสณเถระและพระอุตตรเถระมาเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนายังสุวรรณภูมินี้ เมื่อพระพุทธศาสนาได้แพร่เข้ามา ยังสุวรรณภูมิและลานนาไทย พระพุทธบาทแห่งนี้ก็ได้รับการบำรุงรักษา จนสถานที่นี้ได้แปรสภาพเป็นปูชนียสถานที่สำคัญยิ่งถึงปี พ.ศ. ๑๒๐๐ พระนางจามเทวี ราชธิดาของพระเจ้ากรุงละโว้ (ลพบุรี) ได้เสด็จมาขึ้นครองนครหริภุญชัย พระนางได้สร้างอุโมงค์ครอบรอย พระพุทธบาทไว้ เพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชา เสร็จแล้วได้จัดให้มีการสมโภชเฉลิมฉลองเป็นการใหญ่ครั้นปี พ.ศ. ๑๘๒๔ เมืองหริภุญชัย สมัยของพระยายีบาได้เสียให้แก่พระเจ้าเม็งรายมหาราช กษัตริย์ในราชวงศ์เม็งรายได้ทรงอุปถัมภ์บำรุงสืบมาจนสิ้นราชวงศ์เม็งราย บ้านเมืองเกิดศึกสงคราม ต้องรกร้างว่างเปล่า พระพุทธบาทแห่งนี้ก็มีอันต้องทรุดโทรมลงต่อมาปี พ.ศ. ๒๓๗๕ พระเถระหลายรูป มีพระครูบาป๋าบารมี วัดสะปุ๋งหลวง เป็นประธาน ได้นำทายกทายิกาสร้างพระวิหารหลังใหญ่ครอบพระอุโมงค์พระพุทธบาทไว้อีกชั้นหนึ่งเพื่อเป็นที่พักอาศัยสำหรับสาธุชนที่ขึ้นมาสักการบูชาถึงปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๒ คณะสงฆ์จังหวัดลำพูน มีพระครูพุทธวงศ์ธาดา เจ้าคณะอำเภอป่าซอง วัดฉางข้าวน้อยเหนือเป็นประธาน ฝ่ายฆราวาสมีหลวง วิโรจน์รัฐกิจ (เปรื่อง โรจนกุล) นายอำเภอป่าซอง เป็นประธาน พร้อมกับศรัทธาประชาชนได้พร้อมใจกันไปนิมนต์ครูบาศรีวิชัย นักบุญลือชื่อแห่งลานนาไทย วัดบ้านปาง อำเภอลี้ จังหวัดลำพูน มาเป็นประธานในการก่อสร้างวิหารจตุรมุข ครอบรอยพระพุทธบาทจนสำเร็จตั้งแต่นั้นมา ก็ได้มีพระภิกษุสามเณรมาพักอาศัยและอยู่จำพรรษาเป็นครั้งคราวเนื่องจากบริเวณที่เป็นวัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้า มีทำเลที่เหมาะสมแก่การบำเพ็ญสมณธรรมอย่างยิ่ง ดังนั้นในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๖ พระมงคลญาณมุนี เจ้าคณะจังหวัดลำพูน วัดพระยืน และพระครูพิศาลพุทธิธร เจ้าคณะอำเภอป่าซาง วัดป่าซางงาม เป็นประธานฝ่ายสงฆ์ ฝ่ายฆราวาสมีนายหอม พรหมสิงห์ นายอำเภอป่าซางเป็นประธาน พร้อมด้วยศรัทธาประชาชน ได้พร้อมใจกันไปนิมนต์ครูบาพรหมา พฺรหฺมจกฺโก (พระสุพรหมยานเถร) วัดป่าหนองเจดีย์ ตำบลท่าตุ้ม อำเภอป่าซาง จังหวัดลำพูน มาเป็นประธานในการก่อสร้างถาวรวัตถุต่าง ๆ เช่น พระอุโบสถ กำแพง ถังเก็บน้ำ โรงเรียนปริยัติธรรม ศาลาการเปรียญ กุฏิสงฆ์ เป็นต้น ตั้งแต่บัดนั้นมา วัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้าก็ได้มีพระสงฆ์อยู่ประจำมาโดยตลอด และเป็นวัดที่เจริญรุ่งเรืองตามลำดับจนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๑ ก็ได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นวัดพัฒนาตัวอย่างจากกรมการศาสนา"จากประวัติวัดทั่วราชอาณาจักร เล่ม ๑"วัดพระพุทธบาทตากผ้า เป็นวัดที่ค่อนข้างใหญ่ และมีสถานที่ที่น่าสนใจมากมาย อาทิ พระธาตุเจดีย์สี่ครูบา หรือ มหาเจดีย์สี่ครูบา, วิหารพระพุทธบาท ฯลฯ
