ยี่เป็งคืองานประเพณีของชาวล้านนา ซึ่งก็เหมือนประเพณีลอยกระทงของชาวภาคกลาง คำว่า “ยี่” แปลว่า “สอง” หมายถึง เดือนที่สองเนื่องจากชาวล้านนาจันับเดือนเร็วกว่าภาคอื่นๆไปสองเดือน ส่วนคำว่า “เป็ง” หมายถึง วันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เป็นการนับตามระบบจันทรคติ ดังนี้ “ยี่เป็ง” จึงหมายความว่า วันเพ็ญเดือนสองหรือเดือน 12 ในภาคกลางนั่นเอง ชาวล้านนาทั่วๆไป จะไปทำบุญและประดับประดาบ้าน รวมถึงซุ้มประตูวัดด้วยต้นกล้วย ต้นอ้อย ก้านมะพร้าว และโคมไฟต่างๆ มีทั้งโคมลอยหรือว่าวลม มีลักษณะคล้ายกล่อง ตอนกลางคืนจะมีการลอยโคมไฟกันอย่างสนุกอยากลอยโคมไฟบ้าง ไหนๆ ก็มาทั้งที ในช่วงที่นั่งมองโคมลอยและความครึกครื้นสนุกสนานของงาน พี่ผู้เป็นคนท้องถิ่นที่นี่บอกข้าพเจ้าให้รับรู้ถึงเรื่องราวของตำนานยี่เป็ง โคมไฟหรือว่าวไฟนี้อีกว่า
